Shepherd PTO Newsletter - October 31, 2025
Affected by Furloughs or Experiencing Food Insecurity?

We know that recent benefit cuts and government furloughs are creating challenges for many in our community. If your family is affected and could use resources or support, please don’t hesitate to reach out to the Shepherd administration, Dr. Bardach (school social worker), or your child’s teacher. We’re here to help connect you with the right local services and assistance.

We also want to share a valuable community resource compiled by Councilmember Janeese Lewis George (Ward 4), which includes food, housing, and financial support information for families impacted by the SNAP shutdown here

1st Friday Social Hour - 11/7

Please join us for our SES Monthly Social Hour, which will be held at the Marketplace Plaza at Walter Reed, 7171 12th Street (i.e., the area in front of Whole Foods between 12th Street and Georgia Ave.) on Friday, November 7 at 5:00PM. We had a wonderful turnout last time and hope to have another big showing next week!

Note: We will monitor the weather leading up to the event and provide an alternate location if we need to move inside.

Join us for Shepherd’s inaugural Homecoming on Friday, November 15, from 5–8 PM in the Multi-Purpose Room! This adults-only evening is all about fun, connection, and community—think of it as a laid-back parent playdate.

Enjoy good company, upbeat music, and friendly games like cornhole, water pong, flip cup, spades, Connect 4, and darts. A food truck will be on-site with tasty options available for purchase, and each ticket includes two drink tickets to kick off the fun.

Let’s celebrate our amazing Shepherd community and start a new tradition together!

🎟 New Ticket Price! Tickets are $20. Purchase here.

Note: we are also coordinating with SESSA for on-site childcare! Keep your eyes out for information about this option.

A Note from Room Parents

The Room Parents use the groups.io listserve to distribute information to the school community, either in the main group listserve or in your class-specific group listserve. You need to be a member of the main group: https://shepherd-es.groups.io/g/main (go to that link and register by clicking "apply to membership"). After joining the main group, you can join the class-specific group, identified by your 5th-grade graduation year (e.g., the 1st-grade group is the class of 2030).

Class-specific groups:

2026: 5th Grade (class-of-2026+subscribe@shepherd-es.groups.io)

               2027: 4th Grade (class-of-2027+subscribe@shepherd-es.groups.io)

               2028: 3rd Grade (class-of-2028+subscribe@shepherd-es.groups.io)

               2029: 2nd Grade (class-of-2029+subscribe@shepherd-es.groups.io)

               2030: 1st Grade (class-of-2030+subscribe@shepherd-es.groups.io)

               2031: Kindergarten (class-of-2031+subscribe@shepherd-es.groups.io)

               2032: PK4 (class-of-2032+subscribe@shepherd-es.groups.io)

               2033: PK3 (class-of-2033+subscribe@shepherd-es.groups.io)

Donate to the 180 Fund

The 180 Fund was established in 2009 by Shepherd's PTO as an alternative to the traditional "family enrichment fee" that many DCPS schools request from families to help supplement the annual operating budget for the school. With 180 instructional days in the school year, the 180 Fund equates to $1 per school day per student. Each Shepherd family is asked to consider a contribution of $180 per student to the Fund; payments can be made in one lump sum annually, or by monthly installments. Please submit 180 Fund payments directly via this link.

Many employers offer a corporate matching grant program that can match, double, or even triple the amount of your contribution to the 180 Fund. You will need to provide them with a donation receipt along with our EIN/Tax ID number (47-0879109). Please email our PTO Treasurers to let them know that you have submitted the matching grant with your employer so that they can look out for it.

Thank you to our Donors!
