Shepherd Elementary Library Refresh

Good news! The library at Shepherd will begin getting a needed refresh. The floor will be replaced on Saturday and we need some volunteers on Thursday (11/3) after school to help take the books off of the shelves. If you are able to lend a hand let Amy Zettle amy.zettle@gmail.com know. More opportunities to come!

PTO Board Survey

The PTO Board wants to hear from you!  We're looking for feedback on how to prioritize and address our goals for the year and want to know what is most important to our community.  At your convenience, please take a few minutes to complete this quick survey that will help inform our 2022-2023 planning.

DCPS Boundary Review Announced

DCPS has announced they will conduct a boundary review in 2023 that will inform the future Deal/Wilson boundaries.  We are looking for parents willing to join our Communications & Advocacy Committee who can help Shepherd's involvement in the boundary review.  This committee will look to attend meetings regarding the boundary study, engage the community in advocacy for retaining current boundaries, participate in Ward3 EdNet meetings, etc.  If the Deal/Wilson boundaries are important to you and you would like to be added to the Communications & Advocacy Committee, please email info@shepherd-elementary.org

More information will also be available at the Ward3 EdNet meeting where staff from the Deputy Mayor for Education and DCPS Planning Offices will present. Please mark your calendars for November 9 at 7:00 pm.  To register, please Click Here!

IB Corner

Once a month, the PTO Bulletin will feature special articles and activities related to Shepherd's IB program.  As an IB Primary Years Programme (PYP) school, we are always looking for creative ways to promote international-mindedness, diversity, and inclusion!  For any questions about news in the IB Corner, please reach out to our wonderful IB Coordinator at avani.mack@k12.dc.gov.

IB Ambassadors Student Government

We are excited to announce that 4th grade will be piloting the IB Ambassadors Student Government Program this school year. This is an opportunity for students to develop leadership skills and make an impact on their local and global communities.  Students will have the opportunity to participate in action projects throughout the school year.

The students have just finished writing cards for a local nursing home. Next, they will write letters of appreciation for Veteran's Day! We are excited about this program because of the opportunities it provides for student voice, choice, and ownership!

International Ed Week

Shepherd Mustangs will be celebrating International Ed Week! We have a variety of activities planned throughout the week of November 14th-18th.

  • 2nd/3rd graders will learn about the different ways students get to school around the world.
  • 4th/5th graders will learn about what it is like to live and study abroad in another country!

There will also be lots of connections made in Related Arts throughout the week!

November All School Morning Meeting

Our next virtual all-school meeting will be held on Friday, November 18th from 9:00-9:45am. The theme is American Indian and Alaskan Native Heritage Month and will be hosted by the All-School Committee. We hope that you can join here

Kindergarten Families: Please mark your calendars for a "Conversations with Principal Russell" on Tuesday November 15th at 8:45 am.  It's a great opportunity to chat with Principal Russell and get to know other Kindergarten families.

WAYS TO GIVE BACK
Audit Committee Volunteers Needed

The PTO is looking for 1 additional volunteer to serve on the audit committee and audit our SY21-23 financials. This role is completely virtual so you can work as your schedule allow. We do ask that the audit is completed before November 15th so we can file our taxes. If you or someone you know is interested please send an email to ptotreasurer@shepherd-elementary.org

PTO Board Looking for Used iPad or Tablet

The PTO Board is asking the community if any families would be able to donate an iPad or similar tablet device.  This device would be used to ensure quicker and more efficient onsite sales for events, gear, and spirit wear. If you have a device that you think would fit our need, please email info@shepherd-elementary.org. Thank you!

Looking for More Ways to Give Back?

The Shepherd Website has a comprehensive list of ways to contribute through donations, volunteering, shopping, and sponsorships. Please visit the website for a complete list of vendors and more information on how you can help enrich the Shepherd experience.

Teacher Appreciation Program (TAP)

Congratulations to Mr. Reginald Smith as our October TAP winner!

The Teacher Appreciation Program, or TAP, gives parents an opportunity to recognize a teacher at Shepherd for their great work and dedication. TAP invites parents to write a letter of appreciation recognizing a teacher who has been especially helpful or admirable in the classroom.

Once a month, a special teacher will be selected from the nominations to receive a Wishlist fund bonus.  The recognition letters will also be shared with the selected teacher and school community.

TAP a teacher today by submitting a nomination here.

Time to Support the 2022-2023 Shepherd 180 Fund

Help the Shepherd PTO fund lots of great events, initiatives, and extra circular efforts at Shepherd this year by donating to the 180 Fund.

It's called the 180 Fund because there are 180 instructional days in the school year and your donation of a dollar a day per student helps the PTO support child care at events, sending students on offsite field trips, funding teacher educational wish lists, putting on school plays and concerts, updating outdoor playground equipment, funding additional academic supports, and hosting school-wide events! This budget really helps us give our students even more unique, meaningful and enriching opportunities each year.

Any contribution is always much appreciated. And as a reminder, your contribution is 100% tax deductible. Thanks for your support - we're looking forward to getting back to BETTER THAN NORMAL!

Many, Many Thanks to our 180 Fund Donors!
