Teacher Appreciation Week

Next week is always one of the most important weeks of the year for Shepherd: Teacher Appreciation Week! The PTO is looking to celebrate its teachers with a different sign of recognition for each day of the week and we need your help ensuring student participation. We are also looking for 3 volunteers on May 8th and 3 volunteers on May 9th from 8:00 am - 9:00 am to help coordinate the art projects. Please email info@shepherd-elementary.org if you can assist.

Please see the schedule below and help us show our Shepherd teachers love! All Families - we need your help on May 8th, 9th and 10th!

May 8th - Drop your students off early to create chalk messages for teachers

May 9th - Drop your students off early to design pictures and messages we can post on social media

May 10th - Record your child's special message(s) to teacher(s) and email them the messages

Reenrollment Reminder

Reenrollment is open!! If you are ready to reenroll your child at Shepherd, please visit the DCPS enrollment page here.

Each grade is competing for rewards when their class is the first to reach certain enrollment goals. Rewards include a pizza party and water balloon fight. Please submit your enrollment forms as soon as possible so your Shepherd student has a chance to enjoy some of the fun.

If that wasn't enough motivation, Shepherd's benchmark is to hit 60% enrollment by May 8th and we are only about halfway there. Please enroll today!

Boundary Study Update

At last Wednesday's PTO meeting, the Shepherd PTO Advocacy Committee provided an update on the DCPS Boundary Study after an informative meeting with the Deputy Mayor. A more detailed update is available here.  While we don’t have direct representation on the DC Advisory Committee, we are not disheartened but need your help in making our voices heard through this process. So how can you help?

  1. Join the Shepherd PTO Community Engagement/Advocacy Committee. This committee will be meeting May 10th, 24th and June 14th at 6:30 pm to prepare a response to the DC Advisory Committee. Please contact Amber Romine at azromine@yahoo.com if you would like to participate
  2. Attend upcoming opportunities for public advocacy. The greater our presence, the better! The first meeting is tonight May 3rd at 6:00 pm. Please register for the meeting here.  This meeting will be a listening session for the public but will be valuable in framing questions and feedback for future Townhalls.
  3. Our strongest argument to remaining in the Deal/Jackson Reed feeder pattern is that IB is a Key Programmatic Pathway and Deal's IB program ensures the continuation of that pathway. But we need specific stories to strengthen our argument.  If you have an older child who previously transitioned to Deal and have experience with the IB programmatic pathway, please reach out to Amber Romine at azromine@yahoo.com
  4. Review the Boundary Review Committee Meeting Presentations. The presentation from the first meeting has links to all important foundational documents. You can find the links to that material here

Fall Fest Committee Leads Needed!

The PTO Executive Board is looking for 2 volunteers to lead the 2023 Fall Fest event. Fall Fest is not only an important fundraiser for the school but also a fun day where the community comes together to enoy family-friendly activities in support of Shepherd. We know it's only May, but planning for permits and securing vendors starts over the summer. The time commitment is short-term and we have notes from previous Fall Fest planning efforts to assist our new volunteers. If you think you can support this key community project, please email info@shepherd-elementary.org

PTO Treasurers Needed for 2023-2024

Our 2 "treasured" PTO Treasurers are retiring this June when their children graduate from Shepherd and we need 2 candidates to replace them for next school year. If you are interested in learning more about the position or interested in possibly running, please email ptotreasurer@shepherd-elementary.org

Scholarship Opportunities for Aftercare

The PTO wanted to make sure families were aware of Activity Scholarships for DC Students through Learn24’s Out-of-School-Time (OST) Youth Scholarship Program. The OST Youth Scholarship Program is a new program, managed by the Greater Washington Community Foundation, with the goal of increasing access to OST programs for students with specific needs. Specifically, the program will support students who may be identified as at-risk.

Who:

Anyone who is at risk should apply ANYTIME - applications are rolling

Students who are not at-risk are eligible for funding on a limited bases, with a higher chance of getting funding in April and May than later in the grant cycle. You should apply NOW. 1/3 of grant recipients are not at risk.

How do I apply:https://www.thecommunityfoundation.org/ost-scholarships

How does it work? Apply through the link. Decisions takes about 4 weeks. Money, between $1,000 and $10,000 goes directly to the vendor. This is DC funded program the Community Foundation is managing.

If you still have questions, email info@shepherd-elementary.org and we will ask the community foundation staff.

Teacher Appreciation Program (TAP)

Congratulations to Ms. Scott, Ms. Rajwani and Ms. Saxton as our April TAP winners!

The Teacher Appreciation Program, or TAP, gives parents an opportunity to recognize a teacher at Shepherd for their great work and dedication. TAP invites parents to write a letter of appreciation recognizing a teacher who has been especially helpful or admirable in the classroom.

Once a month, a special teacher will be selected from the nominations to receive a Wishlist fund bonus.  The recognition letters will also be shared with the selected teacher and school community.

TAP a teacher today by submitting a nomination here.

Time to Support the 2022-2023 Shepherd 180 Fund

Help the Shepherd PTO fund lots of great events, initiatives, and extra circular efforts at Shepherd this year by donating to the 180 Fund.

It's called the 180 Fund because there are 180 instructional days in the school year and your donation of a dollar a day per student helps the PTO support child care at events, sending students on offsite field trips, funding teacher educational wish lists, putting on school plays and concerts, updating outdoor playground equipment, funding additional academic supports, and hosting school-wide events! This budget really helps us give our students even more unique, meaningful and enriching opportunities each year.

Any contribution is always much appreciated. And as a reminder, your contribution is 100% tax deductible. Thanks for your support - we're looking forward to getting back to BETTER THAN NORMAL!

Many, Many Thanks to our 180 Fund Donors!
