Update on SESSA No School Days

Shepherd Elementary School Star Achievers (SESSA) has confirmed they will be able to offer child care for No School Days. Shepherd families can sign up through the SESSA website. You do not need to currently be enrolled in Star Achievers Before/After Care to take advantage of the No School Days.

  • After visiting the SESSA website, click on "Register" and you will be redirected to the registration website
  • Scroll down to the bottom of the page where No School Days will be listed for October 19th and 20th
  • Select "Express Register," log in, provide your child(ren)'s details and check out.
  • SESSA offers 2 types of care on No School Days; 9am-3pm and 9am-6pm.

Please send your child(ren) with a lunch. SESSA will provide them with snacks in the morning and afternoon. As a reminder, normal extracurriculars do not meet on days that school is out of session.

Pickup/Drop-Off Reminder

We know the recent construction on Kalmia and 14th street has created additional complications with pick-up and drop-off logistics. At the request of the school, we are sending a friendly reminder to please look for an available parking spot in the neighborhood and then walk to pickup or drop off your child(ren) at the school. If you use the drop off lane, continue moving after your child has safely exited the car. The school's teachers and staff will make sure they enter the school. Please do not double park. It creates safety risks for the students. Thank you for your cooperation.

Ideas for Dr. Brown's Corner

Dr. Brown, our amazing School Psychologist and co-Chair for the PTO's Health, Wellness and Sustainability Committee, is soliciting ideas for her monthly feature in our newsletter. If there are any particular topics and/or health & wellness themes for which you would like resources to be a part of Dr. Brown's Corner monthly, please e-mail your requests at persephone.brown@k12.dc.gov. Thank you!

New Online Gear Store!

The PTO is excited to announce our Shepherd Elementary gear storefront is now available for orders under "Giving Back to Shepherd" on the Shepherd website. After you've completed your purchase, gear will be delivered directly to your child's classroom within 7 business days. The PTO will still host in-person events throughout the year, but the gear store will provide a convenient alternative to those sales.

Please note, if you select gear and it cannot be added to the bag, it is likely sold out.

Giving Back Opportunities
Teacher Appreciation Program (TAP)

The Teacher Appreciation Program, or TAP, gives parents an opportunity to recognize a teacher at Shepherd for their great work and dedication. TAP invites parents to write a letter of appreciation recognizing a teacher who has been especially helpful or admirable in the classroom.

Once a month, a special teacher will be selected from the nominations to receive a Wishlist fund bonus.  The recognition letters will also be shared with the selected teacher and school community.

TAP a teacher today by submitting a nomination here.

Time to Support the 2023-2024 Shepherd 180 Fund

Help the Shepherd PTO fund lots of great events, initiatives, and extra circular efforts at Shepherd this year by donating to the 180 Fund.

It's called the 180 Fund because there are 180 instructional days in the school year and your donation of a dollar a day per student helps the PTO support sending students on offsite field trips, funding teacher educational wish lists, putting on school plays and concerts, updating outdoor playground equipment, funding additional academic supports, and hosting school-wide events! This budget really helps us give our students even more unique, meaningful and enriching opportunities each year.

Any contribution is always much appreciated. And as a reminder, your contribution is 100% tax deductible. Thanks for your support!

Thank you to our 180 Families!!

Community Offerings
Shepherd Tutoring Program

The Shepherd/Tifereth Israel (TI) Tutoring program is about to start its 24th year serving Shepherd Elementary students providing free weekly tutoring to Shepherd Elementary students.

The program meets every Sunday (except holiday weekends) from 5 to 6 p.m. at Tifereth Israel, the local synagogue at the corner of 16th and Juniper Streets. The tutors are mostly members of the synagogue and their teenage children, although they also have had many tutors from the community. They match up a tutor and a student for the entire year, and they form a delightful relationship that helps fuel learning. Every week the tutors work with their students on math, reading, vocabulary, current homework, or anything that the child’s parent or teacher thinks would be helpful. Many parents have sent their children back year after year for the program because they find that it encourages the students in their learning.

This year, we hope to start the program on Sunday, October 15th. If you would like your child to participate, please sign up here. If you have any questions, please email Melissa Perera at shepherdtutoringprogram@gmail.com

In the past, some of the program’s tutors have come from the families of Shepherd students, such as their parents or older siblings. Volunteering in the program is a good source of community service credits. Prospective tutors can sign up at here or email shepherdtutoringprogram@gmail.com for more information about the program.
